Some people think conservation means only viewing our precious natural resources from afar. They believe humans shouldn’t kayak, raft, or paddleboard its waters, hike its trails, forage for food, medicine, or even holiday decorations.

But I reject that idea. Human beings are part of the natural world. We are meant to respectfully and sustainably interact with nature. And conservation includes legally harvesting trees, foraging for natural materials on the forest floor, and more.

 BUT: A visit or call to your local forest or grassland district office is your first step. Tell them what you’re interested in and how you can go about legally harvesting the items, what permits you need, and what guidelines you have to follow.

By cutting trees, and picking up dry vegetation from the forest floor, permit holders are helping the national park service in thinning overcrowded and dense vegetation. This selective thinning will improve the overall health of the forest and reduce the impact of future wildfires.

Most national forests and some state parks allow users to harvest trees for personal use firewood and Christmas trees, but you first need to apply for a Forest Service-issued permit, and you have to follow specific guidelines, which can vary from forest to forest. So, check with the forest you want to visit.
