Feeling Stressed Out Before My Shift

A balanced emotional state is critical waiting tables.

It sets the tone for your guests, and determines how you and your coworkers experience each shift. Product knowledge and technical skill suffer when you don’t have it under control.

We have to train ourselves to shift into an optimal mindset for service, especially on the days when we’re feeling pulled in the opposite direction. It takes discipline and patience.

I’ve by no means mastered this. I struggle like everyone else (probably even more, given who I am), and have made my emotional state a top priority. I developed a daily routine of setting aside 60-90 minutes before every shift to focus on self-care, and it’s making a big difference in how I serve.

With great love and respect, I encourage you to do the same!
